Aledo is a city in the heart of the Region of Murcia, with an area of ​​50.2 km² and 1,056 inhabitants.

Its unique topography gives the city a striking character; perched high on a hill, it resembles a ship sailing through time.

This elevation served as a natural defense in the Middle Ages and led to the fortifications. The castle tower is situated next to an impregnable chasm.

Nestled between the Tercia and Espuña Mountains, with 200 hectares of irrigated land in the Guadalentín Valley, lies the city of Aledo with its 1,000 inhabitants, heirs to the ancient craft of pottery.

The history of Aledo takes us back to legendary sieges from the Middle Ages. For centuries, the fortress stood amidst the impressive landscape of surrounding ravines and slopes.

Even today, it remains an imposing bastion, with sections of the wall still standing, especially the keep.

This battlemented tower is one of the largest and most famous defensive towers in the Region of Murcia, reaching a height of over twenty meters.

The town of Aledo still retains its medieval style and walls, including the castle keep, where Alfonso X the Wise is said to have written his Siete Partidas (Part of the Seven Deadly Sins).

After its prominence in the Middle Ages as a stronghold in the heart of the Guadalentín corridor, the inhabitants began to migrate to the plains from the 16th century onward. This migration led to the foundation of present-day Totana.

Little has changed in Aledo’s urban landscape since then. Today, it remains a town with an indelible medieval atmosphere and a warlike character, and is one of the most beautiful places in the Region of Murcia.
